The thing about being an outsider, no matter what, is that there's a good part, which is that it teaches you to hear what people are thinking
M. Nichols
Contrary to my recent post criticizing those who enjoy the culmination of summer I must reassure you I don't hate fall. And while the walk up the hill with the sun beginning its descent triggered the automated thought: I can’t wait for spring and warmer days .. donating several seconds of a day to entertain an(y) idea doesn’t mean I believe in it or even think it’s true. I’m sitting at the top of Kirkwood Preserve looking out onto a landscape we’d never find this on a summer afternoon. The bare bones of the trees, the lighting, there’s a faint smell of animal carcass, no bothersome bugs, the drying landscape makes new sounds.
On my way here a change in judgement of the seasons and my efforts passed over which was much appreciated after the last few weeks of berating myself for not learning the language of a horticulturist – something I never meant to pursue. The simple fact that I get distracted staring at trees and various landscapes (…while driving..don’t tell anyone…) means I am at least seeing things differently and my minimal art education tells me that’s a good thing.
Speaking of art education I am so excited to be in art class again. To be lectured on van Gogh and Cézanne and to hear the ideas a of a “rebel” (dr. barnes) searching for ways of creative expression that felt right to him despite rejection from the masses because I know the feeling, yet more importantly it seems to give me a reassurance in my ability to design and outdoor space – or any space for that matter that welcomes people and makes them want to stay, because they probably won’t find that feeling in too many other places.
"You can't direct actors very much in a movie, because if you tell them what to do, they'll be doing what you told them...What's interesting in a movie is something happening that nobody planned."
Mike Nichols (1955 – 2014)
